Can I open a new bank account if I owe money at another bank?

I had a bank account for a few years at a very crappy bank. I hated the bank so much so I decided to close the account. Before closing it, I stopped my direct deposits and tried to use all the money I had in my account. 2 months after I took out my money I finally took the initiative to call and close the account.

I had a bank account for a few years at a very crappy bank. I hated the bank so much so I decided to close the account. Before closing it, I stopped my direct deposits and tried to use all the money I had in my account. 2 months after I took out my money I finally took the initiative to call and close the account. When I tried to cancel it turns out my account had already been closed because I over-drafted like 3.00 or something so I owe them around $34.00. Since I have another bank account at another bank I really paid no attention to this account. They were sending me letters at my old address so I never realized I had overdrafted. I mean its just 34.00 freakin dollars, I can definitely pay that!

I've tried contacting them to see how I can pay that money I owe but I have not been able to get any assistance. They keep telling me my account is closed, blah blah. My question is: How can I pay that money if my account is closed with the bank? Is there like another company that handles that? I'm just afraid that I will not be able to open another bank account in the future all for 34.00 freakin dollars! Will those $34 keep me from opening a new account?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Lydia: Go to the bank, pay them $34 and keep the receipt. If you go in person they should be able to call the main office for you and get it figured out.

Some banks do credit checks before opening an account, some do not. At the bank I worked at, we did not open accounts for anyone who owed money at another bank UNLESS they could show proof of payment (the receipt or a letter from the previous bank showing that the debt had been payed off).

Seriously, you want to pay this off. I had people come in for an account that had a debt from an old bank from years and years ago. It was such a hassle. Just get it over with while you can! Good luck!
