I'm trying to cash my paycheck and it's my first time. It says on the check Citibank and a specific address near the employer's workplace. However I live pretty far from there, and I would like to just cash it at a bank where I live, is it possible just to go to a different branch/borough? Also do I need to have a Citibank account there just to cash my paycheck, because my only bank account is on Chase banking?

Peake: Regardless of whether you owe them money or not they will cash the check drawn on an account in GOOD standing with their bank, they may make a quick call to the person who owns the account to verify he/she wrote it then they will ask you for Valid ID and possibly a Major Credit Card in your name, then cash the check. No the bank will not charge you a fee to cash a check from their own bank.

You can deposit your paycheck at your bank. You don't have to take it to the bank it's drawn on.

In fact, if you don't have an account at the bank the check is drawn on, it is very likely you will be charged a fee to cash the check. Most banks used to cash checks on their accounts for free; however, more and more are now charging $5 to $10 to cash checks for non-customers (if you don't have a bank account there, you are not a customer).

Cash it at your own bank. It doesn't need to be a Citibank, and you don't need a Citibank account. It can be any bank.
Erik:
You can deposit the check in your own account. That's the simplest way, and that's what most people do.
