Will my bank close my account if I don t use my card for a year?

Because I m 17 I m going to try not to use my card for a year and try to let the money from my job pile up. I m not trying to get rich early most sertenly not seen as I only earn £5 a hour and work 3 days aweek to suite my college schedule. So not using my card will my bank close my account?

Clive: There's no reason why it should. Banks don't close accounts just because there is no activity. And there IS activity if your wages are still going into it.

Think about this – if it closes the account with money still in it, where is it going to send the money to? If it just takes it, that's theft. So it can't do that.

The last Labour government did actually tackle the problem of accounts that were just sitting around not being used for a long time, and made a law about dormant accounts. The Dormant Bank and Building Society Accounts Act 2008 says that IF an account hasn't been used for 15 years, and IF the bank has tried to contact you and received no answer, then and only then can it assume that the account has been forgotten about. Then it can close the account and give the money to charity.

So you're completely safe. As long as the bank still has your current address, they can't do anything without telling you first.

if you have a bank account any card you would use would be a debit card or an ATM, the bank doesn't care if you don't use the debit card for any amount of time, you can't avoid using the ATM if you are depositing your checks to the account, unless you have direct deposit
now a savings account that has no action in a year or more time can be closed out

Unlikely, but here's another option: make one small purchase (such as a sweet or coffee) every six months–that will show that the account is still active but shouldn't impact your savings plan by much.
Ricki:
No, there's no requirement for you to typically use your card. Read your agreement if you want to be certain or ask the bank.
Tavy:
If money is still going into the bank from your job, then the account is still active.
